Secret Base Cinema is dragging the blood bucket to the Esquire Theatre for a brain melting Halloween Slaughter City double feature, October 24th at 7:30pm. We start the night out with Frank Henenlotter’s disturbing cult creature feature “Basket Case” followed by Abel Ferarra’s 1979 gritty “Driller Killer”. Both movies are guaranteed crowd pleaser so come be part of the mayhem!
Basket Case: Shot on 16mm in 1982’s dangerous New York City by horror comedy heavyweight, Frank Henenlotter (Brain Damage, Frankenhooker). The film follows along with Duane, a man separated from his monstrous conjoined twin, Belial, who communicates to him through telepathy and lives in a (you guessed it) basket. “Basket Case” earns it’s spot on the ‘uncomfortable horror movie’ list through gruesome, gonzo practical effects and an iconic movie creature that is truly disgusting. Strap in for the ride on this one.
Driller Killer: An artist is struggling to finish his next painting, and his leering agent is putting the squeeze on him. He struggles to navigate the rising anxieties of the times, and also finding it difficult to work with the punk band downstairs practicing around the clock. This upsets the ecosystem of his two live-in girlfriend lifestyle, causing him to lash out violently with an electric power drill (battery pack not included). This one comes straight from the notorious “video nasties” list. From singular director Abel Ferrara (who also stars in the film), this movie is a documentation of New York Subculture- Tony Coca Cola and The Roosters are one of the great fake movie bands. Driller Killer is an exploitation film that comments on the society that loves exploitation films.
This NYC horror double is pure dynamite.
